SAO
BEST ANIME!!!! I personally think this is the actual best anime ever (ive seen 39 animes so i know!) . There are some seens that include rape so i say, make sure your child is mature! (great role models because kirito never gives up!)

Fantastic but kinda mature
I love sao, its probably my favorite anime of all time, though it's definitely not a kids show. The main protagonist, kirito, goes through some insane trauma which manifests later in the series. Over the course of it, there are 4 separate rape scenes,(1 per season) lots of death, including kirito himself killing 4 people, and the 4th season (3rd part 2? Idk) has an unholy amount of gore, same with season 3 but to a lesser extent. That said I would recommend it to anyone the characters are fantastic the acton is incredible and the animation is awesome, especially later in. Wait till you're 14, and watch it sub'd but otherwise have fun!

The idea of the show was good but was executed terribly
Episode 1-14 is good for 10 year olds
Episode 14-23 is good for 11-12 year olds
Episode 24 is good for 13-14
I think you should skip episode 24 if you are not 13 years old at least

CSM should have watched the whole anime
The review that's up right now is entirely misleading. I imagine Netflix watched the first few episodes and saw the same mostly tame content CSM did, leading to their TV-PG rating. However, Netflix actually went back in and changed the rating on SAO to TV-14, and with good reason. Later episodes contain implied sex, incest themes, attempted sexual assault, etc. Furthermore, the words "sh*t", "goddamn", and even an F-bomb appear in the dub in later episodes. I kept the rating at 14+, but I'm admittedly less strict then CSM. I imagine they might have their rating higher if they knew about the content later in the series.

Wow...
CSM really screwed up this time. It's really obvious that Emily Ashby didn't watch very much of the show. The first few episodes are quite decieving and seem relatively tame, but once we hit episode 10, sexual content begins to go up. Although there has never been a sex scene (so far, I have no interest in continuing to watch this), you'll start notice stuff get a little worse as the show goes on. Near the end of episode 10, Asuna invites Kirito to stay the night, he thinks innocently about it and it turns out he was wrong. Asuna then strips down to only wearing a bra and panties and then tells him to do the same. He refuses so nothing happens here. You might be thinking this is the only time something like this happens, well, you were very wrong. There may still be no sex scenes, but fan service stuff gets really bad when we enter the second half of the first season. If you don't know what "fan service" is, in this case it means inappropriate content added for the viewers pleasure, basically thing a like the camera focusing on a female characters breasts, legs, and butt. Although nothing is fully shown this becomes quite annoying on top of just plain unnecessary. The villain adds even more to this by occasionally touching Asuna inappropriately and making references to wanting sex. Though she continues to refuse, but he persists her every now and then which is something most viewers will find disturbing. The biggest culprit here is the next to last episode where there is an attempted rape that comes VERY close to happening. The villain final threatens to rape Asuna and begins by touching her, and then starts to pull her top off, he is killed before this. I should also add that on top of this Sword Art Online contains this theme of being awish fullfillment escapist fantasy aimed at the stereotypical gamer, the part that makes this questionable is that it's used as a way for them to pretend they are like the main character Kirito, the guy who is great at everything and gets all the girls. The whole idea of it is troubling and has a certain element of sexism that I think would bother many parents. The point of me saying all this is that there is a lot more inappropriate things in this show and this review failed to mention any of this stuff. I would only recommend this to 15 and up, maybe 14, but anyone else no. Do not be deceived by how tame the show might seem at first, I thought it was something people as young as 11 or 12 could watch. I was very wrong.

Absolutely Stunning
The anime is amazing. I watched it when I was 9, but I recommend it for 10 and up, expect for one episode near the end, with a attempted rape, weird sexually theme, and other weird stuff. That was definitely 13up. This anime is a awesome combination of heartwarming romance and action. It's one of my favorite anime(I've watched around 10) I also recommend the light novel.

Common sense media dosent seam to ha have common sense (this time...)
I am amazed this is said to have a good message and good role models. The main characters seem to be blank stereotypes, Kirto, while being a character with conflict, is presented as a shallow person, who is oblivious to most of his surroundings, especially his relationship with his companions. This is what we want our kids to be right? Asuna seems to be a copy of a girl, who while can fight for herself, seems to constantly need a man to save her. Great messages right? And the show includes many parts with sexualized women in it, so to say it has 0 sex is wrong.

A few questionable moments, otherwise completely fine
I thought this anime was great from the beginning. The protagonist is likable and I also like how the anime is realistic - some characters die. I'm not saying that I like dying characters, but it never makes sense when there are such high stakes and nobody dies.
There are a few questionable moments that include sexual stuff. I won't go into detail, but keep in mind that it can get pretty disturbing and inappropriate. It doesn't show anything graphic (shirt ripped off, but it doesn't show anything). There aren't too many moments like this, but be warned.
I think that the violence is entirely fine. Some characters die, though, so if your kids would get easily scared, this might not be for them. But since the whole story basically takes place in a video game, dying characters simply explode into shards and fade away. So there isn't any blood or gore.
I would have made this ages 8-9 and up, but because of those few scenes, I wouldn't be too sure. If you're just watching a few episodes and not entirely committed, then go ahead!

Somewhat good anime with oddly placed rape scenes.
First off, I'm going to just mention this right off the bat. I don't really like this anime. Now, I'm going to attempt to remain as unbiased as possible, the show could have been amazing if it weren't for one thing, the rape scenes. Now I know you must be wondering what I mean, now I'll explain it to you. In the 2nd last episode of the first season, the antagonist impales the protagonist with his sword and starts chaining the protagonists lover up to where she can't move at all.
Then he starts licking her. And he even pulls off her top, while the camera does not reveal anything, it's still pretty disturbing. While this is happening the protagonist has a "dream" if you will. The person who made the game that he's in says "are you just going to give up?" And eventually the protagonist gets up off the sword from his torso and cuts the antagonist, and then cuts him in half as well as decapitating him.
And then in season 2 there's a near rape scene. While not to the same degree, it's still pretty messed up. One of the female characters friends (not the same female.) tries to drug them, she runs and the protagonist finds the females house and starts beating up the guy who was drugging her, however he gets hit with the drug luckily he doesn't die, but just after he's drugged the girl knocks out the guy who drugged them.
Otherwise it's a fairly decent show that would have been way better without rape scenes. There is some swearing "Damn" mainly. The protagonist is also a great role model as he constantly helps people and saves them.

Great show
I do think that tv-ma was a little of a stretch. I think the rating should be tv-14. There is honestly no REAL nudity just suggestive ( and rarely REALLY suggestive) scenes. The animation is great and I love how it mixes with GGO ( Gun Gal online). Oh and fun fact I'm watching the show right now.

Light fan service throughout the whole series (mainly in later season(s).) Attempted rape in 2nd to last episode in s1. But besides that, it's okay! Maybe some violence but not terrible.

Really good, although it has its flaws.
This show is really good, with a mix of emotions in the 1st season. Around the end of the season though it does contain a part where a male tries to force a girl to have :x and merry him by brainwashing her. The second season does contain a little bit more of everything, including a man who tries to force a girl to have :x with him. even though this is a great show and the main character is a good role model who makes the right choices, I still think you should let teens and up to watch this. if you are sensitive to violence, or can't watch people having :x, then you should wait till around 15-16 years old to watch this show..

Farley serious but kinda disappointing
There are dark moments but none that are too bad. The first half of season one is really good and shows a strong female protagonist and allows for some interesting ideas. From the potential it had it looked like a very good anime and one for all ages to really like. SAO showed to have some unique elements for it to be a anime that has never been seen before. But the last half of the anime became darker, more serious and kinda bland. The writing for the dubbed version wasn't very good and had a couple of issues. They tried to add some comedy to it but it was more awkward due to sexual contexts and them being only teenagers. There was more fillers and made the anime disappointing to watch. The strong female protagonist in the second half became a damsel in distress. It also showed 2 scences where she is almost sexually assaulted. The second last episode took it to a whole new level making it inappropriate for kids under 13 and it is very intense. The awkward comedy, drawn out lazy story, fillers trying to keep it going, increasing the darker elements from its sourace that made it good and the second half making the strong female lead a damsel in distress. The second half in my opinion killed the series being created for teens and teens. But they tried to make it relevant for adults but it only made it look. The anime has since become less popular and now it's relying on a movie to bring it back. Hope they go back to its roots in the movie, but until then kind of a disappointing anime.

Great plot, entertaining, mature scenes
I have watched SAO multiple times and enjoy the main plot and the action. I love the relationships between some of the characters. However, there are multiple scenes that are quite mature, and would not be good for younger children. There are multiple scenes that have rape and implied sexual content, although nothing is directly shown. Otherwise the overall story is enjoyable and would be good for older or mature teens who have an interest in gaming plots.

Definition of a Teenage anime.
Seriously how more teenage can an anime get, This is obviously not a bad thing nor a good thing it is just very teenage like, flirting, kissing, occasional drugs, etc. In my opinion Sword Art Online isn't great but it also isn't mid. It is about a 6/10. I don't really have much to say but I was able to get through all the episodes.
Sex and Nudity: 7/10. There is a scene where 2 girls get sexually assaulted which may be hard to watch. A "couple" which are in love inside the video game end up finding out they are siblings irl, this may make viewers feel uncomfortable. A man attempts to [email protected] a girl in a scene that felt very long. Moderate Sexual references throughout.
Violence: 8/10. Season 1 and 2 are pretty tame with just basic video game violence but season 3 and 4 show actual blood and can be pretty brutal at times. in the first 2 seasons, when characters die they perish into pixels but in the other 2 seasons they will be covered in blood.
Drugs, Smoking, Alcohol, etc: 3/10. Some scenes characters can be seen drinking but there really is nothing that bad.
Language: 4/10. Mild Profanity throughout, never crosses the line, no uses of the f-word.
Scary and Intense Scenes: 7/10. Season 3 can be petty sad at times with all the war scenes but generally this show can get intense at times.
Overall: 7/10.

Great anime, very enjoyable
although it definitely has many flaws, I still found it very enjoyable to watch, the characters are likeable and the isekai genre was relatively unique at the time(more than 10 years ago)
it does have some sussy stuff though

This is the first anime I watched :P
This is the first anime I ever watched in my life and I loved it. I watched this show when I was 9. I got wallowed into this show and this rendered my love of Virtual Reality and fantasies.
Season 1 and season 2 was astonishing. Season 1 is about the oringial "Sword Art Online" and a game called "ALO." It tells us about the lessons of gaming and what can happen if you get obsessed with it.
I think a kid said something about age rating in Common Sense Media, and I'm going to tell you that because I want to lol
I think season 1 is for 14+ because of little nudity and violence
Season 2 is best for 15+ year olds
Season 3 is best for 17+ because of intense nudity and moderate violence
I'm not sure about Season 4 because I haven't watched it yet.
